2016 Game Summaries

Updated January 11, 2017

Here’s the listing of the 2016 games and fan gatherings (FGs).  The accompanying photos can be
be found under the league in which a game was played or under “fan gatherings” in the
buttons shown on the right. An asterisk indicates that it is the first time since I began my
ballparks travels in 2002 that a fan has appeared in an account.  Bold letters indicate that
it is the first time that a “veteran” fan was encountered in 2016.  The number next to each
name indicates order of appearance this season.

12. Best Flag Team in
Major League
Baseball. Most flag
teams are composed of
season ticket holders that
are given about five
minutes of training. The
Orioles Flag Team stays
together from year to
year under Mary Klepper’s
capable leadership. It’s
like comparing amateurs
to professionals. This
flag team is the best in
all of baseball and I’ve
been on nine flag teams.

13. The Last Home
Opener. One of the 30
Major League Baseball
teams has to be the last
to have a “home opener,”
and this season it was the
Dodgers today. With it
being Los Angeles, the
pre-game ceremony was
spectacular with the
highlight being a tribute
to Dodgers broadcaster
Vin Scully. This will be
Vin’s final season behind
the microphone. His
first broadcast for the
Dodgers was in 1950.
He’ll retire on
September 23rd at the
age of 89.

FG 3. Target Field
Tour. For the ninth
season in a row, Tim
and I took a ballparks
tour with the Red Sox
group of fans headed up
by Joel Small and
Alan Gerofsky. It’s now a
tradition. This time the
tour started too late for
us to go into the locker
room because the
players were already
there in preparation for
the game in four hours.
Memories were triggered
about the 1987 and
1991 World Series
Championships, and
players like Tony Oliva,
Harmon Killebrew,
Rod Carew, Kent Hrbek,
Jack Morris, Chili Davis
and Chuck Knoblauch.

22. Suite Caroline.
Once again our group
saw a game from a suite
at the ballpark. Each
suite at Target Field has
a Minnesota lake as its
name. Our suite’s name
was changed by the
group from “Suite Mille
Lacs” to “Suite Caroline.”
Even though Minnesota
is known as the “Land of
10,000 Lakes,” I’ll bet
none of those lakes have
received the name of
“Caroline.” Each of us
other than the minors
also received chits for
two complimentary
draft beers. Some guys
aren’t drinkers and
fortunately they gave me
me their chits. Actually I
received too many.
